174 BARRETT-JACKSON EXPERIENCE WINTER 2024WHERE CLASSIC CHARM MEETS ELECTRIC INNOVATION ON THE OPEN ROADELECTRO MODSOne of the best things about vintage cars is that they can serve as excellent platforms to showcase just how much technology has changed. Like a RestoMod that retains its classic look yet is restored and modified with modern-day body work and technology, an Electro-Mod represents the best of both worlds, upgrading a classic vehicle with an electric, battery-powered drivetrain. Offered with No Reserve at the 2024 Scottsdale Auction is a 1966 Pontiac GTO custom EV convertible. This Electro-Mod features a Tesla 50 KWHR engine seamlessly integrated into the original engine and transmission mounts. To support the electric motors and batteries, the GTO's frame underwent reinforcement, and the original chassis was adapted to incorporate a Tesla Model 3 Performance rear subframe. This subframe includes a powerful 350hp electric motor, a 5-link independent suspension equipped with Tesla highperformance disc brakes and four adjustable QA1 shock absorbers. The braking system is enhanced with Wilwood 4-piston brakes at the front, while Tesla's single-piston disc brakes remain at the rear, providing reliable stopping power. The vehicle also incorporates electronic components responsible for recharging and overseeing the battery and motor functions. Notably, a Dodge electric power steering pump delivers power to the original steering box and interfaces with a GM hydro-boost system, complemented by a Wilwood master cylinder.
