74 BARRETT-JACKSON EXPERIENCE WINTER 2024Chrysler’s factory-backed 426 HEMI cars – and a heavier, extremely rare convertible at that. Immediately, it established an unbeatable reputation (it was undefeated and wound up winning the 1970 NHRA Super Stock World Championship) and inspired Hot Rod magazine’s aptly titled “Earth Mover” feature article on the mighty Chevy. According to marque experts, 8,773 Chevelles were equipped with the RPO Z15 SS454 option for 1970. While no production breakout is available, it is known from GM Heritage records that 4,475 Chevelles were built with the potent LS6 option. Celebrating those heady days, this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS6 convertible heading to the 2024 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction with No Reserve is a true factorybuilt example, authenticated in 2015 by none other than noted Chevrolet expert Jerry MacNeish. Earmarks of authenticity include its original matching-numbers LS6 454/450hp V8 engine, Muncie M22 HD 4-speed manual transmission and 12-bolt 3.31:1 posi-traction rear end. Other important components of this exceptionally original LS6 Chevelle convertible are duly listed on the Certificate of Authenticity and detailed report by MacNeish that accompanies the sale. A professional rotisserie restoration was performed to factory specifications by Rick Nelson’s Musclecar Restoration & Design in Pleasant Plains, Illinois, with the work completed in July 2021. Expertly finished in its originally specified Forest Green paint color with white “SS” Rally stripes and a white power-operated convertible top over a black bucket-seat interior, this highly optioned LS6 convertible also features a cowlinduction hood with hood pins, power steering and power brakes with front discs.
