72 BARRETT-JACKSON EXPERIENCE SPRING 2024CROSSING THE BLOCKAfter Japan surrendered in 1945, marking the end of World War II, U.S. forces continued to occupy the country for some time to create political stability and encourage economic growth. When a new conflict began on the Korean Peninsula, the American military looked for vehicles that could be produced in Japan. Toyota, which was building trucks long before the war, had parts and tooling available that could be adapted to any new military vehicle. It was from these efforts that the Toyota Land Cruiser was born, though it didn’t officially take the name Land Cruiser until much later. The earliest models are regarded as the AK and later BJ. Manufactured between 1960 and 1984, the J40-series Toyota Land Cruiser boasts a robust bodyon-frame structure renowned for its exceptional durability and off-road capabilities. With its spacious cabin and rear seating configuration, the elongated wheelbase FJ45 model gained the moniker “Troopy,” serving as a trusted military troop transport across the globe.At first glance, the final-year “Troopy” selling with No Reserve during the 2024 Palm Beach Auction, April 18-20 at the South Florida Fairgrounds, features a timeless charm with its boxy silhouette and classic design. Finished in matte Silver, it has been treated to a comprehensive restoration to show-quality standards by Land Cruiser specialists House of Cruisers. Its unmistakable styling instantly evokes a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era of adventure and exploration. The FJ45’s utilitarian nature is evident in every detail, from its durable steel body panels to its functional interior layout.Under the hood, the Land Cruiser is powered by a 1FZ-FE engine, known for its bulletproof reliability and ample torque. This rugged powerplant breathes through a complete custom stainless-steel exhaust system and has been equipped with a three-coil pack that adds about 15 to 20 extra horsepower, which helps provide the SUV with the grunt needed to conquer the most challenging terrain, whether it’s navigating rocky trails or powering through deep mud. The engine is backed by a Land Cruiser 70 Series H151F 5-speed manual transmission.The FJ45’s off-road prowess is further enhanced by its robust chassis and drivetrain components. Featuring a 71 Series Land Cruiser front axle with 2-link with adjustable track-bar front suspension with Ironman coil springs and Foam Cell Pro shocks and a 70 Series Land Cruiser rear axle with adjustable 4-link suspension and adjustable track-bar, Ironman coil springs and Foam Cell Pro shocks, the Land Cruiser offers exceptional articulation and wheel travel, allowing it to maintain traction on uneven terrain. Additional highlights include a WARN 8274 Anniversary Edition winch, mounted on a custom front bumper with black synthetic rope to help get the SUV and others out of any risky situations.
