VISIT BARRETT-JACKSON.COM FOR THE COMPLETE DOCKET 141PLAN A SCENIC JOURNEY NORTH TO DISCOVER UNSPOILED FLORIDAROAD TRIP!We all are likely familiar with Florida’s “big” attractions: Walt Disney World, the Everglades, Daytona Beach, Miami … the list is endless. Others are not so well known. For example, did you know you can jump in your car in Palm Beach, head north on I-95 and, just over two hours later, arrive at the longest unspoiled beach in Florida? The Canaveral National Seashore (also known as CANA) is 24 miles of pristine coastal sanctuary for people and wildlife. Stand on the beach here, marvel at the solitude and revel in the refreshing ocean breeze, coming straight across the Atlantic from far-off Africa. Take some time to look around you. Incredibly, there’s not a high-rise condo in sight. You may spy a majestic bald eagle soaring overhead or perched on a tree near the seashore; it’s one of the 310 bird species that call this secluded paradise home. The longest expanse of undeveloped land along the east coast of Florida, CANA contains nearly 58,000 acres of beaches, dunes, mangrove wetlands and a large portion of the Mosquito Lagoon, one of the most diverse and productive estuaries in North America. It is a prime habitat for many threatened and endangered species and provides nesting beaches for several thousand protected marine turtles. (During turtle nesting season, look for yellow stakes in the sand marking the seashore’s turtle nests.)Plan to come early (access is limited; rangers count entries and cut them off when the park is full) and enjoy the sun and surf on the immaculate beaches. Or perhaps you’d prefer to swim, fish, surf and comb for shells, sea beans and sea glass. Enjoy hiking? Take a short self-guided trail to an ancient Native American shell mound or through a lush coastal hammock. If you’re an angler, imagine surf fishing at sunrise with nothing but native vegetation and an access boardwalk behind you on the dune, while just offshore schools of pompano and whiting are ready to take the bait.Looking for a serene place to paddle? Two-thirds of Canaveral National Seashore is in Mosquito Lagoon, with 156 miles of recreational opportunities. One popular activity is kayaking, which offers a chance to see the park from a whole new perspective and experience complete solitude just a few minutes from shore. While kayaks can only be rented outside of the park, you can rent canoes at the Apollo Beach Visitor Center.Another bonus: your visit to CANA may just allow you to
