COMPLETELY RESTORED 1970 PLYMOUTH HEMI SUPERBIRD When you restore a vehicle, you have a few
CROSSING THE BLOCK IN SCOTTSDALE different options regarding the type of detail
you wish to achieve. One of the most popular
DETAILS options, of course, is to make the car better than
it was when it rolled off the assembly line. This
includes ensuring perfectly aligned body panels
MATTER and a pristine paint job, and sometimes adding
performance enhancements. Another option is
to restore the vehicle to as original condition
as possible by utilizing New Old Stock (NOS)
LOT #1400 - 1970 PLYMOUTH HEMI SUPERBIRD – NO RESERVE parts and replicating common factory quirks —
yes, that includes overspray and paint dabs here
and there.

A vehicle from the muscle car era typically
received primer on the underside. Some cars
had the option to forgo the undercoating,
presumably to save money or weight. This
means a vehicle with factory overspray will
only have primer on the underside of the car’s
physical body. The only exception occurs on a
unibody vehicle, where you will see overspray
on the subframe rails, while a body-on-frame
vehicle will never have a speck of overspray on
the frame. Everything from the brake lines to
the exhaust, crossmember, body bushings and
plugs are untouched, because all these items
were installed after the car was painted.
An example of this can be seen on the 1970
Plymouth HEMI Superbird offered with
No Reserve at the 2023 Scottsdale Auction,
January 21-29. According to the consignor, this
Superbird was restored to its original factory
colors and specifications, which includes its
original High-Impact FY1 color of Lemon
Twist Bright Yellow. The car is one of 77 built
with an automatic transmission, and power is
derived from a non-original 426ci HEMI engine
restamped with the correct VIN, a testament to
the detail put into this restoration.
